The Design and Performance of a Fallout-tested Manned Shelter Station and Its Suitability as a Single-family Shelter

Design details, cost analysis and performance characteristics are presented for small, partially-underground fallout shelters utilized as manned stations during a nuclear weapon effects test. Four men occupied each shelter and operated radiation measurements and fallout collection instruments. Two types of shelters were designed to withstand predicted over-pressures: type I, 1-psi overpressure and type II, 5-psi overpressure. The basic structure consisted of an 8-ft diameter, 10-ft long, 12-gage corrugated steel, multi-plate pipe. A steel entranceway with two right-angle turns provided access to the basic structure. Depending on the amount of soil backfill, fallout gamma radiation protection factors up to 470,000 were obtained. The overall performance of the shelters under the conditions experienced was excellent. Shelters of this type have application not only for use as manned stations in nuclear weapon testing and can be adapted for use in residential areas as single-family fallout shelters.
A Method for Determining Mission Re-entry Times for Fallout-contaminated Industrial Complexes

In the event of a nuclear war, knowledge of the time of availability, after contamination by fallout, for re-entry and use of certain resources is important in planning and preparing for the nation's recovery. This study is limited to the estimation of the availability time for industrial complexes that are not physically damaged by the attack or by emergency shut-down, but are inaccessible because of radiological contamination by fallout. A method of calculation proposed to be suitable for all industrial complexes was applied to five petroleum refineries. The findings were that the dose to decontamination personnel is the primary factor limiting re-entry and use. For the standard intensity range of 100 to 30,000 r/hr and dose limits of 30 r/24 hr, 230 r/2 wk and 1,000 r/yr, the mission re-entry time for the refineries studied ranged from 1 to 35 days.
A Time of Arrival Device

A portable high range multi-purpose radiation detection instrument is described. The device performs three separate functions: (1) measurement of gamma dose rate (2) measurement of beta plus gamma dose rate and (3) measurement of beta dose rate in the presence of gamma radiation (by means of gamma cancellation). The ranges of operation for each of these functions are 0 - 2 rad/hr, 0 - 10 rad/hr, 0 - 100 rad/hr, and 0 - 1000 rad/hr in tissue under selected physical conditions. The radiac consists of a dual ionization chamber detector, an electrometer amplifier, and two transistorized power supplies. It is powered by two type D flashlight batteries and will operate continuously in excess of 90 hours with 10% meter light operation. The report covers performance data, design factors, and construction details of the instruments.
A Low Rate Portable Counter

Measurement of low radiation levels is difficult with present count-rate radiacs because of the excessive meter fluctuations on the low ranges. An accessory has been developed which increases the readability of the low ranges in these devices. The Low-Rate Portable Counter is intended for use where the counting rates are below 5000 counts per minute. The instrument utilizes the output pulse normally used to operate headphones, and supplies the operator with a digital display in counts for a preset time. Four fixed counting periods are available: 2, 4, 8, and 15 min. Transistor circuitry is employed, and power is supplied by an internal rechargeable battery source or from a 115-v, 60-cycle line. The AC power supply is also used to recharge the battery pack. The instrument described is intended to be a preliminary model; and although electrical performance was found to be satisfactory, military requirements for vibration and shock were not adhered to.

The report discusses the development of an improved manner of portraying instrument approach and landing (AL) procedures through the use of a modified three-dimensional (3-D) charting technique. Previous AL charting development efforts as well as the geometric projection and photographic techniques considered are described. Analysis of instrument procedures formed the basis for the concept of using pre-drawn symbols for chart compilation which is explained in detail. The Navy and Air Force approaches to 3-D development are compared and discussed with the aid of sample graphics. The report concludes that 3-D approach and landing charts have been operationally evaluated to be a significant improvement and can be produced at a cost saving. (Author).

The contents cover general engineering requirements, as well as specific requirements for the major types of electronic facilities, including automatic data processing centers and transportables. The design criteria are intended for use by experienced architects and engineers. Includes a list of applicable NIST, UFC, and DHS cybersecurity publications for consideration. Why buy a book you can download for free? First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Then you gotta print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people - and its outta paper - and the toner is low (take out the toner cartridge, shake it, then put it back). If it's just 10 pages, no problem, but if it's a 250-page book, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. An engineer that's paid $75 an hour has to do this himself (who has assistant's anymore?). We look over each document carefully and replace poor quality images by going back to the original source document. We proof the document to make sure it's all there - including all changes.
